Gut-loving snack bars are all the rage right now, providing an easy (and tasty) way to get more of the good stuff into your belly. Here’s the lowdown on what pre and probiotics actually are, and the whole foods you’ll find them in — including some of our favourite snack bars.

First things, first: what are pre and probiotics?

Found in certain carbohydrates (and also in supplement form), prebiotics are a form of fibre that provides a ‘feeding ground’ for probiotics. Probiotics rely on nourishment from their prebiotic friends in order to thrive and flourish.

Probiotics are living microorganisms (bacteria and yeasts) found in fermented foods and also supplements; once consumed, probiotics call your digestive system their home, where they make it their business to promote a healthy balance of ‘gut flora’, and it’s not just your digestive health that will reap the benefits. From blood sugar and cardiovascular health to immune and brain health, research continues to show that your gut microbiome (the trillions of microorganisms living in your intestines – the majority in the large intestine) can have a powerful influence on every system of the body.

What are the best sources of prebiotics?

It’s easy to increase your daily intake of prebiotics when there are so many wholefoods that are naturally rich in prebiotic fibre; to name just a few:

  • Legumes (peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans)
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Asparagus
  • Jerusalem artichoke
  • Dandelion greens and dandelion tea
  • Apples and pears
  • Bananas
  • Chicory root (found in coffee substitutes and prebiotic snack bars)

If you’re keen to grab some prebiotic snack bars, make sure they actually contain a prebiotic-rich food from the list above, or an isolated prebiotic derived from a whole food like chicory root, inulin, or vegetable/apple/corn fibre.

What are the best sources of probiotics?

Fermented foods are where the probiotics are at; there are countless probiotic strains out there, some common ones being Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bacillus coagulans; each comes with its own benefits and can also work synergistically with other probiotics.

You’ll find a broad spectrum of probiotics in fermented foods like:

  • Good quality, unsweetened yoghurt (or coconut yoghurt)
  • Kimchi
  • Tempeh (fermented soybeans)
  • Probiotic-enriched snack bars; see our list below
