Back
Ah, winter. Although there are many things to look forward to as the temp drops (read: hearty soups and warming porridges), dry chapped lips is certainly not one of them!
But, before you go reaching for any old lip balm, know that not all are created equal. At GMB, we like our lip balms the same way we like our food; natural, tasty and with a short ingredients list that doesn’t sound like it’s come from a lab!
Research suggests that chemicals like petrolatum and parabens may be linked to endocrine disruption (ie. can interfere with hormones) and since these balms are applied directly onto our lips, we want to be mindful of such ingredients and any other nasties that are not so great for you.
When choosing a lip balm, opt for organic where possible and take a look at the ingredients list to ensure they are free from:
- Petrolatum
- Parabens (and basically anything ending with BENS)
- Artificial flavours/fragrances
- Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
- Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
Seeing as we are well and truly in winter, we’ve put together a definitive guide on some of our favourite lip balms (most of which you’ll find over on the GoodnessMe Shop!) to help you navigate your way through the beauty aisle. They’re moisturising, they’re nourishing and above all, they’re better for you and the environment!
1. Burt’s Bees

Unlike many other lip balms on the market, Burt’s Bees pride themselves of being free from chemical nasties such as parabens, phthalates, petrolatum and SLS which we have mentioned above. The Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm (which you’ll find in the July Box and over on the GoodnessMe Shop) is infused with rich kokum, shea and cocoa butter to leave your lips feeling super moisturised and soft. Burt’s Bees Lip Balms are also cruelty-free and come in a whole range of natural flavours which taste good enough to eat! (But don’t do that).
2. Weleda

Boasting a skin-loving combination of botanical oils and beeswax which work to hydrate the lips and protect from the elements, what we love about the Weleda Skin Food Lip Balm is that it doesn’t leave a sticky residue when applied - just soft, supple lips. Find this over on the GoodnessMe Shop!
3. Dr Bronner's

Made with organic beeswax, Dr Bronner’s lip balm provide a protective barrier with no synthetic ingredients. Organic jojoba, avocado and hemp oils help with extra moisturization and only the finest essential oils are used for fragrance. Apply in cold, windy or dry weather for intense hydration! Find this over on the GoodnessMe Shop!
4. Grahams Natural

Check out this super impressive ingredients list:
Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Vanilla Flavour, Vitamin E, Organic Rosemary Extract, Organic Calendula.
