9 Little Ways To Practice Self-Care

We’re all busy, with crazy calendars and to-do lists. But to show up and be the best possible version of yourself, it’s so important to have a little me-time every day. Self-care keeps us grounded, relaxed and helps us to have a healthy perspective on life.

It doesn’t need to be complicated! Here are 9 ways to sneak a little self-care into your everyday life.

1. Set an intention

As we go about our days, it can be easy to lose sight of the things that matter —like self-love and gratitude. Positive affirmations can be a huge help, and we also love setting daily intentions. Designed by a naturopath and clinical nutritionist, the Project Goddess Intention Cards are amazing. They’re specifically tailored to women’s needs, and they come in a beautiful box! Simply pick out a card and use it to set your tone for the day, and we guarantee it will boost your mood.

Top tip: Project Goddess has also created cards for kids, tweens and teens, so you can spread the love!

2. Treat yourself to that latte you’ve been craving

From matcha and turmeric to beetroot and mushroom, we’re suckers for a rainbow latte here at GMB. Whenever you need a pick-me-up, whip up your favourite healthy latte, and find a peaceful place to sit while you sip. Self-care doesn’t have to be a big production — it can be as simple as stealing little moments like this throughout the day!

Top tip: To feel your absolute best, try to steer clear of caffeine after midday. It can affect your mood, energy, sleep, and leave you feeling tired and wired. Try this caffeine free Shroom Brew latte powder by Knowrish Well.

3. Indulge in a pamper session

Turn your home into a spa for the night! Start by soaking in a warm bath filled with Epsom salts to relax your muscles, and essential oils to calm your mind and nervous system. Then, massage in your most luxurious moisturiser or oil your entire body, and get into your comfiest robe or pyjamas. Pop on a sheet face mask, and then do whatever makes you happy — whether that’s reading a book, watching your favourite TV show, or chatting to your mum/bestie/partner. You could even do a DIY mani/pedi if you’re in the mood!

4. Grab dinner with friends

Nothing puts you in a better mood than a night out with your friends! Choose a yummy healthy restaurant, and order a bunch of share plates so you can try everything while catching up on each other’s lives. And don’t feel guilty about getting dessert or enjoying a glass of vino! Because balance.

5. Take yourself on a date

Sometimes, riding solo is exactly what you need. Whether it’s for an hour or a day, spend some time doing whatever you want to do. Maybe it’s checking out a new cafe that’s known for its raw treats. Maybe it’s reading a book in the sunshine or swimming in the ocean. Maybe it’s a little retail therapy. As long as you’re enjoying your own company, any activity counts as self-care.

6. Unplug

These days, we’re constantly on. Between emails, messages and social media, anyone can reach us at any time, and we’re expected to answer ASAP. It can be incredibly overwhelming, not to mention draining. In this tech-crazy world, unplugging is the ultimate form of self-care. When you need a break from technology, switch off all your devices and focus on the “real world.” It’s the most liberating feeling, and you’ll feel so refreshed afterward.

7. Move your body

Elle Woods was right — exercise really does release endorphins, and endorphins make you happy! The key to exercising as self-care is choosing a workout that you enjoy. Whether it’s running, spinning, pilates or yoga, if it feels good, do it! It’ll shake off the cobwebs, clear your mind, lift your mood, and give you a burst of energy so you can tackle your day. Bonus points if you exercise outside! The sun triggers the release of serotonin in our brain — aka the “happy hormone.”

8. Fuel yourself with nourishing food

Homecooked meals are not only good for the body — they’re good for the soul. They taste better, too! We have plenty of easy and delicious recipes on the GMB blog. They’re all packed with the wholefoods our body needs to function at its peak, like leafy veggies, lean protein, essential fatty acids, fruit, nuts and seeds. Pick one, put on your favourite playlist, and head into the kitchen to whip it up!

9. Learn to say no

Guess what? It’s okay to say no if you want to stay in on a Saturday night and watch a movie. It’s okay to say no if you’ve had a huge day at work and want to cancel your happy hour plans. It’s okay to say no if you’re overwhelmed or uncomfortable. It’s okay to say no to catching up with someone who doesn’t make you feel good about yourself. Setting boundaries is one of the best ways you can take care of yourself. We only have limited time and energy, and it’s important to spend it doing the things you want to do, with the people who lift your spirits — and not drag you down. Learning to say no can be challenging, but we need to reclaim our time and energy. Otherwise, we’ll end up feeling anxious, irritable or burnt out, and that’s not good for our body, mind or soul.

And there you have it! Make sure to always take care of you.
