Janine Allis is not your everyday self-made businesswoman. She grew her juice and smoothie empire, Boost, from her kitchen bench to an international success story. Janine is now sharing her knowledge with others, including through her a role as a “shark” and mentor on Channel Ten’s Shark Tank. Outside of her busy work schedule, Janine is a true believer in balance and loving life and practises Ashtanga yoga every day.
This is a snapshot of my day on a plate:
6.30am
I usually wake up and have a cup of warm water and lemon.
7am
Start the day with a smoothie, which changes : but generally it includes, Kale, Blueberries, coconut water, banana, ice, then I add Chai seeds, protein, flaxseed oil and a supplement I get from my naturopath called Energy X.
7.30am
Walk the dogs and get a decaf latte. Sort the kids out for the day, with lunches, breakfast and then walk our our youngest daughter to school.
9am
I get on the mat for an hour and half of Ashtanga yoga which leaves me feeling centred, relaxed, invigorated and ready to take on the day!
10.30
Will have a juice: Pineapple, carrot, ginger, celery. (in winter I will have a ginger shot: Big chunk of ginger with half an apple)
12.30pm
Lunch is usually a delicious pesto chicken wrap or a quinoa or brown rice salad with loads of colourful and fresh vegetables
3pm
If I’ve been in afternoon meetings, I’m feeling pretty peckish so I’ll have a snack – maybe some trail mix, a handful of nuts, some fruit or a little dark chocolate. If I need something more substantial I’ll have some delicious, healthy homemade banana bread and I have a great recipe for super yummy and good-for-you cacao, date and coconut bites (see recipe below), so I’m often making and freezing those for snacks throughout the week-quick and convenient too!
6pm
Convenience again is key for a busy household with children so we usually put together an easy salad with all the usual suspects including avocado and feta, maybe use the barbeque for some steaks or some seafood (in summer) or enjoy a homemade chicken, mushroom and leek pie in winter
To be honest every day is different as variety and balance really is the spice of life! But some key rules I like to follow (does not always work)
- Breakfast - Have as much nutrition as possible in the morning with juices and smoothies, packed full of raw ingredients
- Lunch – I try to make my largest meal
- Dinner – Not to eat after 7pm (unless we are out with friends) and eat my lightest meal
- This will help you sleep better and wake up fresher
Cacao, Date and Coconut Balls
Ingredients:
- 14 Medjool dates
- 1 cup almond meal
- ½ cup desiccated coconut (you can use shredded also if you prefer)
- 1/3 almond or macadamia oil
- 1/3 pure cacao powder
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- Extra coconut to finish
Method:
Place dates in bowl and cover with water. Stand for 1 hour. Drain and discard seeds.
2.
Process dates, almond meal, coconut, oil, cacao powder and chia seeds until mixture comes together. Transfer to a bowl and stand for 20 mins so chia seeds soften.
3.
Place extra coconut in a shallow dish.
4. Roll a tablespoon’s amount of mixture into balls and roll in coconut to coat
