One question we get asked a lot at GMB is “What’s a good protein bar?” So we thought it was about time to share the low-down on our favourites.

Whether you prefer whey-based protein bars, or are after something dairy free or vegan, we’ve got all bases covered! We’ve even included the protein content of each bar per 100 grams, so that you can easily compare each one.

BSKT Vegan Protein Bars - Raspberry Chia or Cacao Peanut Butter

Made with pepitas and organic, raw, GMO free and fermented golden pea protein (phew!), BSKT’s Natural Protein Blend is the star ingredient here, packing in as much protein as many non-vegan protein bars on the market.

One of our criteria for protein bars is that they can’t just have an impressive wholefood ingredients list; they also have to taste good! These two definitely pass the test. FYI you’ll find chunks of BSKT’s famous dark chocolate (GMB Founder Peta’s fave!) in the Peanut and Cacao Protein Bar…just sayin’.

Protein per serve (45g bar): 10.7g in the Raspberry Chia, 10.3g in the Peanut Cacao
Protein per 100g: About 23.5g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? Yes

Cubee Foods - Protein Cubes

This is your clean whey protein bar, cubed! There’s a good ratio of soft: chewy in here, thanks to all the wholesome ingredients packed in. Our pick: the Protein Salted Caramel Cubee, made with real foods you’d keep in your pantry, like almonds, almond butter and almond meal, dates, vanilla and sea salt Whey protein helps bump up the protein content of this cute little cube to 9.6g.

Pop a Cubee in your bag or your desk draw so you’ve got your pre or post-workout snack ready, or an energy boost come the 3pm slump.

Protein per serve (42g cube): 9.6g
Protein per 100g: 23g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? No

The Fit Foodie - Cookie Dough Protein Ball Mix

alt

Image @fit_mixes

You heard us…this mix legit tastes like cookie dough, and unlike super commercial protein balls or bars with long and chemically ingredients lists, The Fit Foodie only uses natural ingredients – like almond meal, oats, cashews and cacao nibs! The pea protein in here is flavoured with natural vanilla, and sweetened with ‘thaumatin’, a fruit protein that tastes naturally sweet, and with no funny aftertaste.

Simply add the mix to a bowl, combine with a little coconut oil and rice malt syrup, and get rolling! The mixture makes about 15 balls, so is good value for money too.

Protein per serve (37g, approx. 3 small balls): 11.1g
Protein per 100g: 32.5g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? Yes

RXBAR

Firstly, take a look at RXBAR’s packaging…the ingredients list for each variety is in large, bold font on the front of the packaging. These guys clearly have nothing to hide. Take the Peanut butter RXBAR, which contains just 3 egg whites, 14 peanuts, and 2 dates, plus a little sea salt…cool huh?! Great to see egg whites now making an appearance in protein bars. Peanuts also happen to be the highest-protein ‘nut’ (they’re technically a legume). This is your real food protein bar.

Protein per serve (52g bar): 12g
Protein per 100g: About 23g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? No

Ridiculously Delicious Peanut Butter Bar – Original Crunch

alt

Image @forabelphotography

Thanks to the goodness of pure Aussie-roasted peanuts and peanut butter (no nasty vegetable oils here!) this is your protein bar meets health bar, meets energy bar…it could even pass as dessert! We love that peanuts and Ridiculously Delicious’ premium Peanut Butter make up a whopping 50% of this bar...and the 50% cocoa dark choc coating is the cherry on top.

The chia seeds in here add some crunch factor, and are a nice wholefood alternative to those highly processed ‘protein crisps’ you get in commercial protein bars! Did we mention this is also preservative free?

Protein per serve (50g bar): 7.4g
Protein per 100g: 14.7g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? No

The Health Food Guys - Vanilla Blueberry Raw Protein Bar

alt

@thehealthfoodguys

One of the higher protein vegan bars on the market, thanks to organic, wholegrain bio-fermented
brown rice protein being the main ingredient. Props to The Health Food Guys for creating a protein bar with a short and sweet list of wholefood ingredients. The unique addition of tahini adds a lovely nutty flavour, and we like that this is refined sugar free. Also available in Macao or Cacao-Goji, there’s a flavour combo to suit every taste.

Protein per serve (55g bar): 15.1g
Protein per 100g: 14.7g
Gluten Free? Yes
Dairy Free/Vegan? Yes

You’ll find these bars at the health food store and at selective supermarkets. Let us know in the Comments know which one (or ones!) you try, and if you have any other favourites you’d add to our list.
