Wholefoodie Spotlight: Rachael Hobbs
This is the lovely Rachel Hobbs who is slaying a balanced healthy lifestyle. We love Rachel's simplistic approach to healthy eating and are super excited to share her journey with you and show you that it is super easy to live a healthy lifestyle.
How did you eat growing up?
Growing up I ate a pretty well-balanced diet, I suppose a ‘typical’ diet. Meat and 3 veg type dinners, cereal or toast for breakfast, vegemite sandwich for lunch. There was no real focus on eating ‘clean’, just ‘well’ and everything in moderation.
How do you feel now that you eat wholefoods?
Since changing my diet to include more wholefoods, I’ve noticed subtle changes to how I feel which I never noticed before because I’d never known any better. Since I no longer consume cows milk, I’ve noticed less bloating and a general uncomfortable feeling in my tummy. After meals, I just feel better overall. That sluggish feeling is a thing of the past and I never feel heavy or gross.
How would you describe your food philosophy?
My food philosophy would probably be something along the lines of “Nourish, Not Punish”. I focus on eating foods that make me feel good and help me live a healthy and sustainable life.
What made you switch to wholefoods?
After years and years of yo-yo dieting and cutting out every type of food group known to man at one stage or another, I decided to take it ‘back to basics’ I guess you could say.
Was the change difficult and if so how did you overcome this?
Overall I’ve found this relatively easy as my body feels better eating whole foods and I really enjoy trying new foods that I may not have considered before. There are still times when I go out for a meal with my family or friends and I eat whatever I like, I think that’s ok and important to enjoy all of life’s pleasures. It’s a lifestyle, not a diet plan.
Any tips or advice for those out there trying to make the switch to a wholefood lifestyle?
Be creative and make it fun. Go and find some cafes and restaurants that are wholefood based and get inspired for new recipe ideas! Food can be fun and learning is all part of the process!
After making the switch, how did you feel after and did you notice things you could do that you couldn't do before?
A few years ago, I experienced recurrent cystic acne, I’d never even really had much acne as a teenager, but at 23 I started to break out terribly. After 6 months of antibiotics, I noticed improvements but 6 months after completing the antibiotic course, the acne returned. Since focussing to consume more wholefoods and less animal products in my diet over the past 9 months I have not had a single cystic acne breakout!
Is there anything you can do now or you have done, which you once thought would have never been possible?
Honestly, I’ve found a balance with food I never thought I could achieve. I’ve always been an ‘all or nothing’ kind of person and have done the weirdest and wackiest diets in search of being ‘healthy’ and maintaining my ideal weight. Eating wholefoods has allowed me to find true balance in a healthy and sustainable way, and that is more than I ever could have expected.
What are 4 staple products that are always in your shopping trolley?
How has GMB helped you on your health journey?
GMB has provided me with so many amazing products that I never would have known about, from clean plant-based protein powders to sustainable products such as wax wraps and fabric produce bags. I also love that many of the products are from small businesses!
What has been your all-time favourite product in our box and why?
I was stoked to get the Seedlip alcohol free spirit in the July box as I've taken on a 365-day alcohol free challenge this year! I think it’s such an innovative product and definitely something I’ll be buying and drinking in the future, even after the 365 days.
