Morning is my favorite time of the day. There’s something about the stillness – I love peeking out the window and seeing the scattered lights of fellow early-risers squeezing the best out of their waking hours. It’s my sacred space between slumber and reality, precious time that I dedicate to myself.
Before peeling back the covers, I take a few moments to say a simple prayer of gratitude by listing a handful of things I’m thankful.; This is something I’ve started only recently, after realizing how negative my first thoughts of the day were. Shifting your thoughts from negative to the positive puts the power back in your hands, giving you control of how you choose to experience your day. ‘I can’t be bothered to go to the gym today’ turns into ‘I am so grateful to have such a strong, healthy body that allows me to practice yoga for an hour.’
My old school alarm clock usually wakes me at 6am (we have a strict no-phone-in-the-bedroom policy!) I go to the bathroom, brush my teeth and head to the kitchen to turn on the kettle. While it boils, I settle onto my meditation stool for 10-20 minutes of quiet stillness, simply hanging out with my breath. If I go for a run or go to a yoga class, I’ll wake up a bit earlier and meditate when I get home. I love the feeling of sitting still and feeling the blood rush around my body after a good workout.
In warmer weather I’m all about super smoothies and green juices, but on colder mornings I’m much happier with a piece of toasted spelt sourdough with eggs and avocado. I also love making little takeaway breakfast jars for my boyfriend and I when we’re on the go, layered with natural yoghurt, fresh berries and healthy muesli like Forage Cereal, which has plenty of good fats, proteins and carbs into my break to keep me focused and energized until lunch.
Lately on the way to work, I’ve been listening to podcasts and audiobooks to get my mind moving. I do my best to avoid checking emails before getting into the office – when I do my me-time morning is officially over!
Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl? How do you love to start your day?
