This month, we chat to member of the GMB Fam and Wholefoodie, Jessie Reid. As always, we love seeing how we have helped inspire people on their wellness journey - from learning how to read nutrition labels, making healthy food swaps and adopting lifelong habits from our regular challenges. Keep reading as Jessie takes us through her health story!

How did you eat growing up?

My mother was a bit of a foodie so in the very early eighties, it was all a bit hippie, but I remember trying sundried tomatoes and being amazed! There was a lot of Italian food at my grandparents where I lived part-time and at my mother’s, there were always veggies and herbs growing. I always loved food and learned to cook really young but I really liked junk food... white bread Vegemite toast was a favourite.

How do you feel now that you eat wholefoods?

I feel more grounded and at the same time energetic. When I eat low nutritional value foods I feel sluggish, bloated, tired and my digestion goes beserk!

How would you describe your food philosophy?

Real food please. I try to make sure supplements like smoothie powders are made from wholefoods rather than lab-created chemicals.

What made you switch to wholefoods?

I developed digestive issues and my anxiety became worse, the solutions that doctors offered were meagre and unhelpful, so I used the knowledge I had gained studying naturopathy in my twenties to switch my diet up.

Was the change difficult and if so how did you overcome this?

Switching like for like has been the easiest thing to do and cut down rather than cut out so better quality chocolate with lower sugar content rather than NO chocolate. I am satisfied with less and don’t crave it like I used to.

Any tips or advice for those out there trying to make the switch to a wholefood lifestyle?

Start by adding more of the good stuff rather than banning foods. I feel adding good quality nutritious food is more important than removing low nutrient foods. Add avocado or tomato to Vegemite toast for example or leafy greens to your ham and cheese sandwich. Choose a bar made from just a few wholefoods like Blue Dinosaur rather than a muesli bar or chemistry lab protein bar. More vegetables, more fruit, more 'closer to natural state' foods. I found that you stop craving so many of those low nutrient foods if you concentrate on nourishing foods.

After making the switch, how did you feel and did you notice things you could do that you couldn't do before?

I manage stress much better and don’t find myself reaching for food to fix emotions and boredom as much - and when I do, I make choices that don’t make my emotional state worse (hello, no more tubs of ice cream in front of the TV!). My kiddos make pretty balanced choices too, they love fruit and veggie platters and cooking and they adore trying new snacks in the kid’s GMB.

Is there anything you can do now or you have done, which you once thought would have been possible?

I do impossible things everyday! I used to have chronic anxiety and couldn’t even make a phone call, now I amaze myself everyday with how far I have come, five children, running a business and appearing in the media, I do yoga and meditate everyday and sometimes go whole weeks without eating cheese!

What are 4 staple products that are always in your shopping trolley?

Rice crackers, tinned tomatoes (a hard ask at present!), pepitas, natural peanut butter.

How has GMB helped you on your health journey?

I have had a GMB subscription on and off for maybe five years and I have found so many great products that I have loved, it has meant buy new products and navigate the mind boggling array of products on the shelves having tried and tested them myself! I also just really like getting the surprises in the post, it’s like a nourishing lucky dip that helps me make great snack choices!

What has been your all-time favourite product in our box and why?

I LOVE the Shelby’s Healthy Hedonism dusted almonds, I can’t decide which flavour is my favourite though!
