Closely resembling the texture of pulled pork or shredded chicken, jackfruit has quickly become a popular meat alternative for vegans and vegetarians. A tropical fruit native found in parts of India and Asia, it’s understood to boast nutritional benefits such as fibre, potassium and antioxidants. What exactly is it?

Put simply, it’s a large tropical fruit. Cut it open and with the flesh, you can enjoy all the dishes you would typically make with pork or chicken thanks to its mimicking texture. You can buy it canned, marinated or as part of a meal kit.

What does it taste like?

Being a fruit, it’s *slightly* sweet, but overall the flavour is quite neutral which makes it a great option for soaking up many different flavours and seasoning, particularly great for Mexican or Thai dishes.

How do you use it?

We’ve got a fab taco recipe you can check out here. Some other meal ideas include fried rice, stir-fry, burritos, sandwiches, burgers and salads, butter “chicken” or “pork” buns. Most meal kits like the Ceres Organics simply require you to heat and serve making it a super easy option for lunch or dinner!

Just a note that although it does make for a good substitute to meat products thanks to its taste and texture, it doesn't contain nearly as much protein, so be sure to be reaching for additional protein-rich sources such as legumes or tofu if you're vegan to ensure you're getting enough.

Don't forget, you can shop a range of jackfruit meal kits and flavours over on the GoodnessMe Shop!
