With hundreds of tea varieties on the market, it can be confusing. Which one should you be drinking? Today, we’re breaking down two of our favourites: white tea vs green tea…

What’s the difference between white tea and green tea?

Though both white and green tea comes from the same plant, the camellia sinesis, they’re harvested in different ways – and that’s what sets them apart. White tea is harvested earlier, when the leaves and buds are young, then steamed and dried quickly. Because there’s only a small window in spring where this can be done, white tea is more rare than its green (and brown) tea cousins. Green tea leaves are picked a little later, and also steamed. This difference in timing affects taste: green tea has a fresh, herbal taste, while white tea is smooth and slightly sweeter.

But neither tea is heavily processed, so they’re rich in antioxidants, catechins and a bunch of other nutrients that boost health. Winning!

The health benefits of green tea

Sipping on green tea is great for your overall health. Thanks to its antioxidant content, it helps to combat free radicals and slow down cell damage and ageing. It also contains caffeine and an amino acid called L-theanine, which work together to boost brain function, mental clarity and productivity. So, the next time you have a looming deadline, make yourself a cuppa! Studies have shown that those bioactive compounds also help with memory, reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

As if that wasn’t enough, the nutrients in green tea rev up the metabolism and fat-burning process, particularly around the (stubborn) stomach area. By extension, this helps to ward off cardiovascular disease. Green tea can assist with balancing blood sugar levels, which lowers the risk of type II diabetes later on. Not bad, huh?

And what about white tea?

White tea has been popular in China for centuries, and for good reason. It’s higher in naturally occurring antioxidants, which, like the ones in green tea, help to fight inflammation, boost immunity, improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of diabetes and even cancer. These antioxidants also help to repair vein tissue and stall the breakdown of elastin and collagen, which are two signs of ageing. While it contains less caffeine (15g, in comparison to green tea, which has 20g), it still enhances weight loss efforts by speeding up the metabolism and curbing appetite.

That’s not all. White tea has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties as well as a little fluoride, so it does a great job at killing the bacteria that causes tooth decay, plaque build-up and bad breath. Even we’re impressed!

So, which tea should you drink?
