The Sweetener Everyone Is Talking About
Maybe you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake, or maybe you’ve tried traditional sweeteners and found them to be bitter or metallic. That’s where allulose comes in! This natural sweetener is starting to make waves as it tastes and bakes just like sugar, but doesn’t cause your blood sugars to crash.
Let’s find out more!
What is allulose, and how is SaweetWay different?
SaweetWay isn’t your average sugar swap. It’s made from allulose, a rare type of natural sugar that’s found in figs, sultanas and maple syrup. These plant sugars are then extracted and converted into allulose. At this point, a lot of commercial companies start adding colours, flavours and preservatives - and that’s where SaweetWay stands out. Their products are unrefined and contain one ingredient: 100% pure allulose.
The result? A clean, simple sweetener without any artificial additives.

SaweetWay vs. sugar
To get science-y for a minute, allulose has about 70% of the sweetness of regular sugar (sucrose), and 90% fewer calories (0.4 kilojoules/gram vs. 4 kilojoules/gram). Unlike sugar, allulose is low-glycaemic, meaning it doesn’t spike your blood sugar or insulin levels. Instead, it supports slow, steady energy. Thanks to its nutrient makeup and the fact it’s low-GI, allulose is suitable for vegan, keto and gluten-free lifestyles!
But how does SaweetWay really compare to sugar? Allulose has a similar taste, texture and mouthfeel as sugar, and doesn’t have a bitter, synthetic aftertaste or a cooling effect like a lot of artificial sweeteners with sugar alcohols.
SaweetWay also dissolves easily without overpowering flavour. It browns and caramelises beautifully, which is why it’s one of our baking MVPs! And while allulose is a kind of sugar, the body metabolises it differently. We absorb it, but don’t convert it to energy, which is why it has way less calories than standard sugar.
In a nutshell, SaweetWay works just like sugar, without the crash. If you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake or looking for an all-natural sweetener that won’t send you on a ride on the blood sugar rollercoaster, it’s an amazing option.
A quick note about energy
The reason sugar is so addictive is because it puts us into a spike-and-slump cycle.
When we consume sugar, our blood glucose and insulin levels spike and we get a quick rush of energy. This is then followed by a sudden drop in energy, which is why we often end up feeling 3.30itis. That’s when sugary cravings often kick in, as we’re trying to feel that rush of energy once again. It really is a rollercoaster!
The goal is to find food swaps that support stable energy. This helps us maintain focus and mental clarity, balance our moods and reduce cravings and snack spirals (i.e. eating one sugary snack after another).
How to swap sugar for allulose
Allulose is less sweet than sugar and browns a little quicker, so here are the adjustments to make when you start to swap it in. SaweetWay comes in two formats: granules and syrup.
Replacing white or brown sugar with allulose granules
SaweetWay Pure Allulose Natural Sweetener Granules look and cook just like white sugar. Allulose is about 70% as sweet, so you’ll need a bit more.
- 1 cup sugar → 1 ¼ to 1 ⅓ cups SaweetWay granules
- 1 tbsp sugar → 1 tbsp + 1 tsp SaweetWay granules

Replacing honey or maple syrup with allulose syrup
SaweetWay Pure Allulose Natural Sweetener Syrup is a smooth, golden and versatile syrup free from fructose, sucrose and glucose. The sweetness levels are similar, so this is a fuss-free swap!
- 1 cup honey/maple syrup → 1 cup SaweetWay syrup

For both prods, when you’re baking, lower your oven temp by 10-15°C. For your coffee or cuppa, start with 1-2 tsp allulose granules/syrup per cup and adjust to your taste. And if you’re mixing allulose into cold drinks or raw desserts, it’ll dissolve well but it’s worth stirring a little longer.
